The first pair of numbers refers to the lightness (light or dark) of the color. The Pantone System has nine levels of lightness designated by numbers 11 through 19. This ensures that all values between white and black can be quickly determined.
The second pair of numbers specifies the hue – yellow, red, blue, green. etc. The hue circle is divided into 64 sectors, with 01 containing yellow-green and so on through the spectrum to sector 64. The 64 sectors cover all the pure colors. 00 represents a neutral point.
The third pair of numbers describes the chroma level of the color. It is divided into 65 steps starting with 00, a neutral, and ending with 64 being the maximum chroma of the color.
